Certified Diamond FAQs
Is there a difference between a jewelry store appraisal and a certificate?
Yes, there is a monumental difference. The appraisal that is provided by the retail jeweler, even if they are a GIA gemologist is strictly their opinion, and is primarily for insurance purposes. Generally, jewelry store appraisals are used as a marketing tool by the retail jeweler, and usually have a highly inflated valuation as well as an inflated color and clarity grade.
Why types of certificates do you accept?
We prefer the Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) diamond grading reports, but also accept European Gemological Laboratory (E.G.L) diamond certificates and American Gem Society diamond grading reports.
Why is a diamond grading report form the GIA preferable?
Internationally, the GIA is the preeminent source of gemological knowledge. The GIA diamond grading report and the GIA diamond dossier are considered the world’s premier credentials for a diamond.
Diamond dealers around the globe buy and sell diamonds sight unseen based strictly on the GIA grading report. Some of the most famous diamonds in the world have been graded by the GIA including the Hope Diamond at 45.52cts and the Taylor-Burton Diamond at 69.42cts.
Do you buy diamonds that are not certified?
Yes, many of our customers have diamonds that were either inherited or that they received as gifts, and do not have a certificate. One of our gemologists will perform a complete evaluation of your diamond upon receipt and will call you with our findings and purchase offer.
Do you purchase Fancy color diamonds?
Yes, we purchase natural fancy color diamonds. Fancy color diamonds exist in a rainbow of yellows, reds, pinks, blues, greens, purples and all shades in-between.
Do you purchase lab-created or simulated diamonds?
No. The Estate Buyer prides itself on purchasing only natural diamonds. Lab-created and simulated diamonds have little to no resale value.
